House Building Rivalry

This is the story of a man named Harvey. Harvey worked a somewhat exciting job down on the Mornington Peninsula, renting shacks down by the beaches of Dromana. No two days were the same for Harvey, but there was a common thread across all of them. You see, ever since Harvey opened his beach shack business, competing with the local luxury home builder guild, he had started to hear the voice of a strange narrator, describing his actions throughout each day. At first, Harvey had believed himself crazy; then he thought it to be the voice of god. But no, the sad truth was that this narrator was nothing more than a person sitting at an office desk, writing strange little stories to go on the internet.

Although Harvey’s psychologist was somewhat concerned about this strange occurrence, she believed it was safe for Harvey to work, so long as the voice didn’t narrate Harvey doing anything dangerous, either to himself or to others. And so far, that had been the case. Harvey believed he was mostly in control of his actions, and other than his strange rivalry with some of the luxury building companies near the Mornington Peninsula, his life could only be described simply as being normal.

In fact, now that Harvey thought about it, the fact that he had a rivalry with building companies at all was strange. After all, they weren’t really his competitors. He certainly had plenty of respect for their craft, building some incredible houses for people to live in. He wasn’t jealous of their fancy houses, nor was he in need of their business. Perhaps he simply had this rivalry with them because the narrator had told him to. Maybe the narrator in his head wasn’t so nice after all. What could he, she or they be planning? After all, Harvey wasn’t exactly sure which gender the narrator identified as, and he could only describe the voice in his head as somewhat genderless.

Anyway, Harvey decided that he wanted to get to the bottom of this. Why had the narrator appeared all of a sudden, and what did they want? Why cause him to have feelings of rivalry and competitiveness with seemingly unrelated businesses? He was going to find out.
